When Tropical Storm Isaias barreled through Queens last Tuesday it took down a massive tree, which now sits on top of two homes on Killarney Street in Howard Beach.

As it toppled over, residents say power lines and utility poles went down with it.

What You Need To Know

  • Residents in some parts of Howard Beach have been without power since Tuesday

  • Several utility poles have been weighed down and shifted, including one on the corner of Killarney Street and 156th Avenue

  • Residents are worried if another pole falls, a fire could start

Since then, families like the Conter's have been without power.

"They told us to not even actually come out that much out of the house because they could fall down, so they are aware it could get worse, but how do you stay inside with no power,” asked Enrico Conter.

Concern compounded their frustration as the situation grows more dangerous by the day.

At the corner of Killarney and 156th Avenue, the base of a utility pole has started to buckle due to the weight of the tree.

The family living in the corner house said they have tried to stay on one side of their home in hopes of being out of range if it does fall.

"We are just waiting for this to happen,” said Les and Adela McCrudy. “I hope it doesn't happen, but it’s nerve wracking."

Sunday's high temperatures did not make it easy for Philliss Nappi and her family of seven, including her pregnant daughter-in-law, elderly mother-in-law and young granddaughter.

"Con Ed has been basically walking up and down the block, they just look at the pole, I mean I don't understand,” said Nappi.

When we asked Con Ed about the situation, they said a crew should have made it to the scene by Sunday afternoon.

Until then, residents say they will continue to take precautions.

"I sleep on the couch at night to make sure the extension cords don't go on fire,” said Howard Beach resident Pat Anderson. “I sleep with a fire extinguisher. I shouldn't have to do that. "

"Its almost like we are forgotten ‘cause now it is almost one week and no one is here to help,” said Conter.
