NEW YORK - Family, friends, and community leaders are demanding action after a 17-year-old basketball player was killed by a stray bullet in the Bronx.

Brandon Hendricks died Sunday night.

He had just graduated from James Monroe High School and was planning on going to Saint John's University in the fall.

Balloons were released during a vigil in his memory Wednesday night.

The event took place at a basketball court in Harlem where Hendricks often played.

"The major thing I remember about him was his inability to hide his smile, even when he was young and you’d say something cute to him, he would just bust out," said Noel Ellison, Hendricks' uncle.

"For you to be talking to somebody and then they die a couple hours later, it’s unbelievable and that was one of my closest friends," said T.J. Bamba, Hendricks' friend.

Hendricks would have turned 18 next week.

No arrests have been made.
