Police Commissioner Dermot Shea is offering an explanation as to why there's been a jump in gun violence recently.

The number of shootings in the city continues to be on the rise. There were 65 incidents this past week, compared to 26 the same week last year.

Shea says it's a combination of factors building over the course of the year.

"It's laws. We need tools. It's covid. It's a criminal justice system that's not working. You know, all of this, I've said. All of this I've forecast, and it's coming home to roost unfortunately,” he said.

The police commissioner also called on the criminal justice system to do its job.

He added that cops need three things: support, tools (like laws) to aid them in doing their job and resources.
