NEW YORK - Street parking was the subject of a community board meeting on the Upper West Side Tuesday night.

Residents and members of Community Board 7 debated whether to ask the city to study parking and the use of curb space in the neighborhood.

Potential changes include launching a paid residential permit program and installing meters where parking is currently free.

Supporters say the parking problems have to be addressed, but critics are concerned about a possible ban on free parking.

"It's going to lead to a place that it's already predetermined it's going to go. Where would that be? Ban parking on West End Avenue, to install meters on West End Avenue to make restricted permits all over the place," said one Upper West Side resident.

"The streets are dangerous And they're getting more dangerous and where I live cars are constantly triple parked," said another Upper West Side resident.

The board voted 22-12 in favor of asking the city to step in.

The vote comes as the city prepares to implement a congestion fee below 61st Street in Manhattan later this year.
