QUEENS, N.Y. - After campaigning to the city for more classroom space to meet its growing student population, Success Academy is finally getting its wish.

The city says it will build a new middle school for charter students in South Ozone Park.

The Department of Education says there's a former school on Rockaway Boulevard near 126th street that is in good shape and would be able to meet student demands for at least two years.

The DOE says it could be ready by next August.

A state law requires the city to pay rent for charters if it won't give them public sace.

Parents and students have said the DOE ignored their previous requests for a new middle school. And sources say Success Academy officials have not seen this space.

The charter school network released a statement saying, "While there are many public school buildings with space available which would be far closer to our families, we intend to examine this option in good faith to see whether it can meet the needs of our families."
