NEW YORK - The city officially launches its expanded school zone speed camera program Thursday.

A state law passed earlier this year allows the city to install hundreds more speed cameras and extend their hours of operation.

Speed cameras will now track vehicles from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This month the city will also begin adding cameras to more school zones with the ultimate goal of having cameras in 750 school zones.

There are currently cameras in 140 school zones.

Drivers caught by the cameras face a $50 fine.
