NEW YORK - The state's ban on single-use plastic bags doesn't take effect until next year, but one Democratic state lawmaker is already looking to expand its reach.

State Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy, who represents parts of Albany County, is pushing a bill that would lift the exemption on restaurants, which use plastic bags for take-out orders and leftovers.

She says restaurants use too many plastic bags to be left out of the ban.

The ban on single-use plastic bags was passed earlier this week in the state budget.

Under the new policy, local counties can also impose a five cent fee on paper bags.
