Two of Staten Island's most prominent elected officials now say they will not march in this weekend's St. Patrick's Day Parade, in a show of solidarity with the borough's Pride community.

Following news that the island's largest LGBT advocacy group, Pride Center of Staten Island, again was not allowed to march in the annual parade, Borough President James Oddo announced he will not march.

The Republican tweeted, "I wanted to, and thought I could reconcile my call for inclusion with still marching, but internally I cannot."

Shortly after Oddo's tweet, Max Rose, who represents the borough and part of southern Brooklyn in the U.S. House of Representatives, followed suit.

"I struggled with how to support the LGBTQ community while still honoring our Island's rich Irish heritage, but for me I cannot march while the Pride Center of Staten Island is still excluded," the Democrat tweeted.

The Pride Center's executive director said the parade's organizer told her last month that the group's banner "promoted a homosexual lifestyle" and that the event wasn't a "sexual identification parade."

Oddo and Rose now join Staten Island Councilwoman Debi Rose, who told NY1 on Thursday that she planned to skip the parade.
