QUEENS, N.Y. -  Prakash Hundalan and his wife Bina are adjusting to a new reality without their beloved daughter Sherena, and calling for the arrest of the suspected hit and run driver police say took the 26-year-old's life.

"It's so devastating for us, the whole family," said Prakash Hundalani. "I want him arrested on manslaughter, he has killed my daughter instantly and my love of my life. We cannot live without her."

"We just cannot get over this" said Bina Hundalani.

A makeshift memorial sits at the corner of 63rd Road and Queens Boulevard where Sherena Hundalani was struck and killed a by green taxi Sunday.

Police say they arrested and then released the driver identified by sources as Lakhvinder Singh after he told investigators his taxi malfunctioned. But sources say police believe that may be a cover and that Singh may have actually suffered a medical condition which, if true, could put his livelihood in jeopardy. The Hundalani's are outraged at the thought.

“He doesn't deserve to be out because he's a liar. He has medial problem, then he says he has a car problem," said Prakash Hundalani.

Compounding the family's tragedy, police say Sherena was hit when the taxi sped down the sidewalk.

"You cannot let that person go," said her mother, imploring police to investigate. "She was not wrong, she was standing on the sidewalk."

The grieving parents are now carrying on as best they can at their family owned restaurant where Sherena worked as a manager.

"I want to run the restaurant on her behalf, on her love. All the customers here today, they've come for her," said Prakash Hundalani.

They’re hoping that police and prosecutors can find justice for their daughter and the family they say is now shattered.

Sources say the driver was charged with leaving the scene of the hit and run and that the taxi is being tested for mechanical problems.

So far, the Queens district attorney has declined to prosecute.
