Antonia Martinez says she couldn't believe her eyes when her daughter Michelle's wheelchair, was stolen.

It was covered in plastic and tied with a chain to a fence next to their Jackson Heights apartment building.

The chain was cut and the chair valued at around $5,000, was nowhere in sight.

"The wheelchair is too heavy to carry, especially with her. That’s why I leave it down there tied with a chain," Martinez, Michelle’s mother said.

Martinez made the unfortunate discovery around 9 p.m. on Christmas Day. Michelle Molina is 18 years old. She suffers from scoliosis and Rett Syndrome. The teen cannot speak and depends on a wheelchair to get around. Her school bus will not let her board without it.

“I was very sad. The wheelchair is indispensable for her. She needs it to be transported to school or to go outside. It is so important.”

But after hearing Michelle's story, many people have stepped up to help out.

NY1 received several calls from people eager to lend the family a hand, donating a chair.

It doesn’t have all the features Molina needs, like a support harness and feet straps but the family is still grateful.

“I really did not expect this. Thank you very much to everyone that has taken out the time to call me and ask and to say that they want to donate a wheelchair,” Martinez added.

Martinez says police told her they found the stolen chair dumped on the street.

It’s now at the precinct, part of the investigation. No suspect has been caught or identified.
