Immigration rights activist Ravi Ragbir faces possible deportation this weekend — and one local lawmaker is hoping new legislation can stop that.

The bill, introduced yesterday by Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, would grant Ragbir permanent status.

It also leaves room for him to legally return to the U.S. if he is deported.

Ragbir was released from federal jail last month after being arrested during a routine check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

He's been fighting deportation to his native Trinidad since a wire fraud conviction more than a decade ago.

Velázquez says Ragbir isn't a danger to anyone and "Threats to deport him are nonsensical and inhumane."

Ragbir will face a judge in New Jersey on Friday.
