BATAVIA, N.Y. -- A train derailment halted travel for several people in Batavia overnight.

Twelve cars from a CSX freight train went off the rails near Donahue Road, likely because of the wind.

CSX officials say the train had two locomotives and 29 freight cars carrying items including gun powder.

No one was hurt, but the hours-long cleanup stopped at least one Amtrak train leaving passengers stranded overnight.

Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes was on the Amtrak train on her way back to Buffalo from Albany. She says she boarded at 4 p.m. Wednesday for what's normally a five-hour ride, but the train got stopped in Batavia and didn't move past the derailment scene until around 4:15 a.m. Thursday

"It is a long day, it is a long night, and I do understand that things happen, particularly as it relates to the weather, but I do also think that Amtrak could have done a much better job of informing their paid passengers what the status of their trip was," Peoples-Stokes said.

The assemblywoman says she would have liked a heads up so she could arrange a different ride home.

The group arrived in Depew around 4:40 a.m.

Amtrak did not immediately return a request for comment.
