The man convicted in the infamous murder of Kitty Genovese has died.

The state Department of Corrections says Winston Moseley died March 28 at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York.

Genovese was just 28 years old when she was raped and murdered near her home in Kew Gardens, Queens in March 1964.

The attack made headlines and became a symbol of urban decay following reports that no one intervened after hearing her cries for help.

But those reports were later discredited.

Moseley was captured five days after the killing and was convicted of first degree murder.

He spent more than 50 years in prison, and died at the age of 81.
