U.S. Customs officials arrested a woman at JFK Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin into the country.
Officers say Rosa Almonte De Ortega arrived at JFK from the Dominican Republic on January 6.
While searching her bag, Customs agents say they found a bottle of Dominican alcohol containing pellets they say tested positive for heroin.
Officials say the pellets weighed close to a pound and are estimated to be valued at $27,000.
De Ortega was arrested for the importation of a controlled substance.
Officials say De Ortega is also expected to be charged with smuggling.
