Police Commissioner Dermot Shea told NY1 he's comfortable with the NYPD's new public database containing information about officer discipline records.

Anyone can now go online and search a database of officers by name and look at information about their disciplinary record, their training background and other details.

Speaking with “Mornings On 1,” the commissioner said the department isn't afraid to be held accountable.

"Almost 90% of officers don't have a substantiated complaint — that's a part of that story as well,” said Shea. “So we're a step into the way now of real transparency regarding discipline, and I hope that goes a long way towards getting some of that trust back with the public."

Police unions spoke out strongly against the idea of making records available to the public.

But reform advocates say it doesn't go far enough, because the database only includes disciplinary incidents for which an officer was found guilty of formal charges.
