1. Students return to public schools Thursday

Students will return to public schools today — in a year that will see schools grapple with budget cuts, drop most COVID-19 regulations and focus on the priorities of a new mayoral administration.

It’s the first, first day of school for Mayor Eric Adams and the city’s Schools Chancellor David Banks, who are introducing new initiatives, such as a safety plan that includes hiring more NYPD school safety agents and a pilot program to help children with dyslexia.

3. Student, 15, shot and killed in Brooklyn after school

A 15-year-old male was killed after being shot in the abdomen Wednesday afternoon at McLaughlin Park in Brooklyn, according to police.

The victim was a student at Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School, which is two blocks away from the downtown Brooklyn park, police said. Students were dismissed from school at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for a half day — the shooting took place shortly after dismissal at around 1:45 p.m., according to the NYPD.
