When Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist and philanthropist, was asked if disinformation was a threat to democracy, he said everyone needs “honest information.”

“In order to vote effectively, in order to vote for people to stand up for our country, we need good information, we need honest information,” he told Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Friday. “That requires a trustworthy press, which I call the immune system of democracy.”

Next Wednesday, the State of America Summit is being held to talk about the country’s democracy. For the event’s outcome, Newmark hopes to see people concerned about the issue and stand up for “what helps protect our country.”

“It’s old-fashioned of me to say it, but we’re talking patriotism,” he said, adding that it’s incumbent for people with goodwill to “flood the zone with facts.”

Newmark also talked about how to people can get involved in democracy and how to protect it.
