Councilwoman Shahana Hanif joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” on Tuesday to talk about some her legislative priorities. She weighed in on President Joe Biden’s planned visit to the city later this week, saying that she would like him to tour Rikers Island to witness first-hand the deplorable conditions inside the jail complex.

During the interview, Hanif also explained she supports a $1 billion cut to the NYPD’s budget, arguing that the money should be invested in improving mental health and other social services to combat the root causes of crime in the city.

Hanif, who’s in the chair of the council’s committee on immigration, spoke in support of a new city law that will grant voting rights to green-card holders and other immigrants with work authorization. Under the new measure, this noncitizen New Yorkers will be able to vote in local elections, but not in state or federal ones
