A bit of New York history is about to be made. On Saturday (yes, Saturday), October 26th, Early Voting comes to New York for the first time. Hoorah!! And there is reason to celebrate. With a pathetic voter turnout record (the state ranks 41st in the nation in voter turnout), something needed to be done to get more people to the polls. But this is only the first step in dragging a somewhat antiquated voting system into the 21st Century. For one thing, gone will be the election books we all had to sign (the only proof of identity required). Now poll workers will have iPads containing our information, making them better equipped to send us to the right polling place. Kate Doran and Susan Lerner have led the fight for election law changes. They join In Focus to talk about the differences we’ll see, the ones we won’t see, what we can expect to see in the future, and why New York’s voting system, while a little old fashioned, is still safe. Plus, Susan Lerner will fill us in on the court case Common Cause is working on, where 200,000 voters were purged from the lists ahead of the 2016 elections.
