Today's Big Stories

1. Senate will vote next week on bill to codify Roe v. Wade, Schumer says

The U.S. Senate will vote next week on a bill to codify the right to an abortion into law, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced Thursday.

"Today, I'm announcing that next week the U.S. Senate is going to vote on legislation to codify a woman's right to seek an abortion into federal law," Schumer said on the Senate floor Thursday. The vote, he said, would be set for Wednesday.

2. Officer shoots, injures knife-wielding man in Brooklyn: NYPD

An NYPD officer shot and injured a knife-wielding man after he charged at a group of officers in Brooklyn on Thursday — and one officer’s hand was cut in the struggle that ensued, authorities said.

An officer was walking on West 8th Street, between Neptune and Surf avenues, around 12:55 p.m. when he spotted a man armed with two knives, one of which was 16 inches long, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news conference.

3. Poll: Few New Yorkers feel 'very safe' riding the subway

Only 15% of New Yorkers feel “very safe” riding the subway during the day — and a majority would like to see more police officers patrolling the system, a new poll found.

Quinnipiac University on Wednesday released the results of a poll that asked registered New York City voters to share their thoughts on Mayor Eric Adams’ first few months in office, as well as issues ranging from crime to affordable housing.

4. Hochul says New York may need federal help with abortion services

New York may need federal assistance if there is an influx of women seeking abortion services in the state, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday in an interview.

It's not clear what support New York would seek from the federal government. Such assistance may be constrained by the Hyde amendment, which bars federal money being used to pay for abortions with exceptions made for rape or incest.

5. How abortion laws could change in New York

Democratic elected officials in New York have signaled they will take action to enhance the state's current abortion laws after the release of a draft ruling at the U.S. Supreme Court that could lead to the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

If the court does rule and issue the opinion that became public this week, abortion laws would be turned back to the states unless Congress approves a nationwide law setting policy. In New York, a heavily Democratic state where the party maintains statewide power, measures could easily be approved in the comings.

6. New York officials to study 'underbanked' communities

New York regulators will conduct a study of communities that are lacking banking options and other basic financial services under a measure approved on Thursday by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The bill seeks to address a long-standing concern in low-income communities that banking options are limited, leading people to use check cashing services or payday loan businesses that often use large fees to process payments.

Squash returns to Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall

For years, commuters at Grand Central Terminal were accustomed to the January arrival of a squash court inside the transit hub for the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions. But the pandemic lead to a cancellation last year and then a postponement of the event this year. Now, it is finally back. NY1 reporter Roger Clark spoke with some of the players about returning to this unique venue for the racquet sport.
