This holiday weekend is the first weekend swimming is allowed at New York City’s public beaches.

With many New Yorkers eager to hit the sand, the city is making sure beachgoers are taking safety precautions and socially distancing.

Lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m, as previously announced by Mayor de Blasio. Swimming is considered unsafe and prohibited at all other times.

NYC Parks Ambassadors will continue to staff beaches and distribute masks. They will ensure social distancing guidelines are followed. Signage will also be directing beachgoers on safety measures.

Should certain sections of the beach become too crowded, visitors will be directed to other less crowded areas, according to the city.

New Yorkers are encouraged to continue washing and sanitizing their hands, and wear face coverings.

While concessions will not be open, food will be available for takeout, per the mayor.

State guidelines ask that beachgoers only visit with members of their immediate household, and maintain an appropriate six-foot distance from others while swimming and on beaches and boardwalks.

Blankets and chairs should be set up at least 10 feet apart from others.

Beaches will also be reducing their normal summer season capacity by 50%. They will limit parking and other means of entry. Capacity will also be reduced in changing areas, locker rooms and restrooms.

Contact sports and other outdoor activities are prohibited, and areas of social gathering will be closed.

Frequent cleaning and disinfecting will be conducted throughout the day at restrooms and other frequently touched areas.
