Former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik surrendered to authorities today to begin his prison term.

Kerik turned himself in to a Maryland prison at 1:45 p.m. to begin serving a four-year sentence.

He will serve the term at the Federal Correctional Institution in Cumberland, MD, as inmate number 84888-054. He will be assigned to a "prison camp" in the minimum-security facility, where he will work for about 7.5 hours a day.

The 54-year-old is not going silently. On his website, he criticized the prosecutors and judge in his case saying he has expressed remorse for what he may have done, but that he "can't remain silent in the face of what I believe has been a gross injustice, which I pray will be remedied."

Kerik pleaded guilty in November to eight felonies, including lying to the White House on his application to become Homeland Security secretary, lying about work done by a mob-connected contractor, and filing false tax returns.

Kerik has also been ordered to pay $188,000 in restitution and to pay past-due taxes and penalties on six years of tax returns.
