October didn't feel or look much like October this year in New York City.

What You Need To Know

  • This was the fifth-warmest October for New York City in over 150 years

  • Twenty-three out of 31 days had above-average temperatures

  • The month had a dry start and a stormy finish

Halloween decorations were one of the few ways you could tell what month it was in the city this past October. Temperatures felt more like September and the trees hardly developed any fall color.

Overall, it was the fifth-warmest October for New York City in more than 150 years of records. There were nine days with temperatures in the 70s. The warm weather delayed the fall foliage with trees running about two weeks late in turning color.

The warmest day was October 15 when we hit 79 degrees. The coldest reading for the month was 47 degrees, which we achieved on three days. Overall, the average temperature was 62 degrees, which was 4.1 degrees above average.

In terms of rain, the first three weeks of the month were very dry. Over the first 24 days in the month, total rainfall was under an inch. Then, things changed over the last seven days. We got two significant storms and saw five inches of rainfall. The heaviest rain was October 26 when the city was soaked by over three inches of rain.

The weather for Halloween wasn't scary at all. It was mostly dry and temperatures peaked near 60 degrees. It was definitely a treat and not a trick.
