BRONX, N.Y. - Police in the Bronx are investigating after a man shot by officers Wednesday morning claimed he wanted to die after testing positive for coronavirus.

Investigators say police got a call around 4 a.m. reporting a man armed with a knife and a gun on Zerega and Westchester avenues in Westchester Square.

When officers arrived they say man pointed his gun at them. Investigators say he continued to advance toward the officers despite numerous warnings to stop and drop his weapon.

Chief of Department Terence Monahan says one officer fired 10 times - another fired once - hitting the 55-year-old man in the leg

"When we spoke to him in the hospital as to what he was doing - he said he was looking to commit suicide by police officer. He said he had been tested for COVID last night and he's positive. He said he is overweight and diabetic. He thought he was going to die anyway so he wanted the police officers to take his life," Monahan said.

The man is now in stable condition.

It is not yet clear if he actually tested positive for coronavirus.
