With the holiday season winding down, it is time to let your Christmas tree go.

The Department of Sanitation started its curbside collection of trees today.

You can leave both natural and fake trees on curbs to be either composted or recycled.

Crews will be picking them up through January 13.

Trees should be unbagged, and stripped of all lights, ornaments and stands.

They will be turned into mulch for the city's fields, parks and gardens.

You can also bring your tree to the annual Mulchfest this weekend, and leave with a bag of your own mulch.

The Sanitation Department says more than 242,000 trees were collected last year.
