M and E train riders: This week's commute could get a little rough for you.

The MTA has closed the tunnel these lines use until 8 a.m. on Dec. 31.

The E is running along the F line from the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue stop in Queens to West 4th Street in Manhattan.

The M line is not running to or from Manhattan, although the M Shuttle is still operating between Metropolitan Avenue and Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenue.

The MTA said it makes more sense to do the work all at once, at a time of the year when ridership is significantly less, rather than over several weekends.

"It's a unique opportunity. One, we have significantly less riders during the week between Christmas and New Year's than we normally do, and the number in the mornings is down, what, 45 percent less in the commute — in the morning commutes — on this line," MTA Chairman Joe Lhota said last week.

The repair work includes replacing two thousand feet of third rail, 700 feet of track, and installing four miles of new signal wiring.
