The Second Avenue subway marks its first anniversary.

Three stations along the Second Avenue Subway opened to the public on January 1, 2017 after being on the drawing board for nearly a century.

Governor Cuomo unveiled the new line with former MTA chairman, Thomas Prendergast.

The train takes people from the Upper East Side to Coney Island.

The MTA says ridership on the Second Avenue Subway has eased some of the congestion on the nearby 4,5, and 6 trains.

And local store owners say the line has also helped their businesses.

"It's been amazing," said one business owner. "We see the foot traffic has drastically increased here on the Upper East Side. People are coming from Midtown, we're getting tourism that we never had before."

Plans for a second phase of the new subway would extend the line to 125th Street and connect it with the 4/5/6.
