A roughly two-minute video released by Actor Cynthia Nixon on her website "Cynthia for New York" is warm and personal, but also sharply critical of Governor Cuomo without ever mentioning him by name.

"We want our government to work again. On health care. On ending mass incarceration. On fixing our broken subway," Nixon says in the video. "We are sick of politicians who care more about headlines and power than they do about us.”

Best known as character Miranda Hobbs from HBO's "Sex and The City," Nixon has been active in New York politics. She is also a close ally of Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is engaged in an ongoing feud with Governor Cuomo.

Cuomo's re-election campaign responded to Nixon's announcement in a statement, saying, "It’s great that we live in a democracy where anyone can run for office. Governor Cuomo has delivered more real progressive wins than any other Democrat in the country, including passing marriage equality, the strongest gun safety law in the nation, a $15 minimum wage, free college tuition, paid family leave, record setting funding for public education, expanding and protecting healthcare for our most vulnerable, and banning fracking. We look forward to building on that record as we continue to fight and deliver for New York families statewide.”

Republicans quickly seized on Nixon’s entry into the race, with many welcoming anyone willing to take on Cuomo, even though they hardly agree with Nixon on most issues.

"I think it's great that she is doing it because it shows what I have been saying all along, that whether you are from the left or the right or the middle, people are tired of Governor Cuomo. It’s not just all sides of the political spectrum, but the manner of doing business that he has," said state Senator John DeFrancisco, a Republican candidate for governor.

Nixon has her work cut out for her, but if her slickly produced video is any evidence, she plans on running a real campaign.

"I’m Cynthia Nixon. I’m a New Yorker. And together we can win this fight," she says in the video.

In 2014, Cuomo faced a challenge from Fordham Law Professor Zephyr Teachout. She ended up with 34% of the vote. Since then Cuomo has tacked left with his policies, but will it be enough to appease the party’s left wing? Teachout is involved this time around as well. She will serve as Nixon’s campaign treasurer.
