In Queens, serving up a solution to raise funds for their local church, inspired two women to open up their own restaurant.

To raise money for La Luz del Mundo church, Irma Vargas and her mother Maria Ramirez decided to make and sell pupusas outside its Jackson Heights location. The dish is a classic from their native El Salvador.  Little did they know, their home style cooking on the weekends would grow so popular, customers wanted more.

So the two opened up their own restaurant in Sunnyside called 'Ricas Pupusas & Mas.'

Vargas says like tacos are to Mexicans, pupusa is to Salvadorians, and patrons are eating it up. "You could eat pupusas for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's all day. The first timers they really love it. It's something they've never tried before, so when they leave here I get so happy"

The restaurant is a family affair with the kids wanting to help out too.  Vargas says though they've always been close, building the business has brought them even closer.
