QUEENS, N.Y. - One person was taken to the hospital in critical condition Sunday after a fire tore through a public housing development in Kew Gardens Hills.
It started just after 6 p.m. on the seventh floor of the Pomonok Houses located at 156-03 71st Avenue.
People who live nearby said firefighters had trouble evacuating one apartment.
"People started coming out but it was one apartment that was stuck where one person couldn't get out and that is 6D everyone else got out fine and like I said everyone made it out alive even the lady who had the fire," said one witness.
Investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started.
