QUEENS, N.Y. - United Airlines on Thursday cut the ribbon to new facilities at LaGuardia Airport before passengers begin using them on Sunday.

"Even just walking in today to see customers and the look on their faces, was to me, spectacular," said Jill Kaplan, President of New Jersey/New York for United Airlines.

The airline dedicated five new gates of the new eastern concourse of Terminal B and the new United Club. It's 30 percent larger than the old club, offering a sweeping view of the tarmac and can be used by travelers after they have passed through security.

"Great cities deserve a great airport. and for so long, the infrastructure in this great city has struggled. and this place is just amazing," said United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz.

Officials hope economy fliers will find the new gate area welcoming, too. It's bathed in natural light, packed with charging stations and populated by some of city's popular restaurant and retail brands.

This is the latest milestone of Governor Andrew Cuomo's $8 billion, 2.7 million square foot LaGuardia airport renovation project which started in 2016.

Construction has upset area residents and frustrated travelers but there has been progress.

This concourse in Terminal B first opened in December with 11 gates and will continue rolling out more capacity until all 35 gates are in use by the end of next year.

"Fliers can expect great modern new facilities and amenities, world class shops, world class service," said Huntley Lawrence, Director of Aviation for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Next week, workers will demolish the old Terminal B gates as construction continues on LaGuardia's terminals, roadways, and bridges.

A new Terminal C is scheduled to open in 2021.
