Construction is now underway on a new home for a non-profit that helps Immigrant New Yorkers have their voices heard.

Make the Road New York broke ground Thursday on a new community center in Corona.

The building will serve as the non-profits first permanent home.

Officials say it will better enable the organization to help immigrants come together and advocate for the rights and policies they say they deserve.

"When you run a non-profit that's meant to provide a home, a safe place for members of our community and that same non-profit has to worry every couple of years of losing their own space, it's drastic, it's drastic to now have a place to call home where our community can walk in and get the services they need," said Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz.

The new community center is expected to open in 2020.
