Thousands of New Yorkers lent a helping hand to clean up and beautify some city schools on Saturday.

The initiative was part of the annual New York Cares Day for Schools. 3,000 volunteers painted classrooms, organized libraries, created murals, and transformed playgrounds and gardens.

The goal is to enhance a student's learning experience by making their environment more inviting.

In the schools that were chosen, 95 percent of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
