Residents of Bikini Bottom will take their final bow Sunday night, as a historic theater closes its doors for renovations.

"SpongeBob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical" is leaving The Palace Theatre after less than a year on the Great White Way.

The century-old theater is slated to be closed until 2021 for a multi-billion dollar renovation.

First built in 1913, the Palace reached legendary status for vaudeville performers, ultimately becoming one of the most desired bookings in the country.

When the theater reopens, it is expected to have a new entrance, a 75-foot marquee, and wing space for larger shows.

"It's one of the exciting things is bringing the theatre into the 21st Century in such a way that the dressing rooms for the performers will be much better — much more comfortable. We'll have better facilities, bathrooms for the men and women," said Stewart F. Lane, the co-owner of The Palace Theatre. "Everything's going to be brand new for them. But, at the same time, we're able to maintain the integrity of the landmark interior of The Palace Theatre."

The musical, based on the popular children's television show, was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and came away with the honor for Best Scenic Design of a Musical.

The show will reportedly go on a national tour in the fall of 2019.
