A correction officer was assaulted by three inmates on Rikers Island this past week, the Department of Correction said.

Sources say it happened around 10 p.m. Saturday at the Robert N. Davoren Complex.

According to sources, the officer got into a scuffle with an inmate and as he fought off the inmate, two others jumped in.

Sources tell NY1 the officer fractured his hand and had to get five stitches to close a cut on his ear.

The inmates will be re-arrested and face new charges.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department of Correction said, "This is further evidence that correction officers have one of the most difficult jobs in law enforcement and deserve our appreciation and support."
