New Yorkers may have noticed a slight difference in the sirens on Mt. Sinai ambulances.

According to Bob Levy, a daytime supervisor at Mt. Sinai, there has been a change.

Levy said that despite everything the hospital system is involved with, that noise complaints were among the most common issues.

In response, the company reached out to the manufacturer of their ambulances and found out they were playing a default siren.

They then listened to the other siren options, got feedback from the public, and settled on a new tone that Levy called more “melodic”.

He said that while the decibels at which the sirens play are still the same that since the switch was made they’ve received fewer complaints.

Another benefit, according to Levy, is that more drivers are paying attention to the sirens.

Levy said more cars are being built to be sound resistant and with all the distractions out there, the change in the melody appears to be catching people's attention easier.
