Assembly members announce the formation of a new historic caucus in the State legislature.

Queens Assemblyman Ron Kim joined Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie in Flushing to announce the development of The Asian Pacific American Legislative Caucus. It will be the first state government body dedicated to researching and advocating for issues, policies, and laws that impact New York’s Asian-American community.

Those in attendance not only celebrated the historic achievement, but also spoke about their goals for the Caucus.

"I think in this era of so much anti immigrant sentiments there are so many Asian Americans and other immigrants who are living fearful everyday that they don't know if they are welcome in their own backyard so first and foremost we want to work on legislation that sends a strong signal to Asain Americans and all immigrants that you are welcome in our state," said Kim.

He says it took about 4 years to get to this point.
