A Long Island City hotel is finding a new way to bring a Zen atmosphere to the neighborhood. NY1's Clodagh McGowan filed the following report.
As the sun sets on the city that never sleeps, yoga enthusiasts are finding their inner calm on the rooftop of the Z NYC Hotel in Long Island City.
"It's a nice opportunity to get connected to yourself, in the fast pace of the city over there. We get to step out and practice yoga, in a beautiful outdoor environment and get to look at that city that we love," said yoga instructor, Sarah Guffey.
For the hotel staff, it's a way to bring more people to the rooftop during the week.
Staff members say the hotel averages about 80 percent occupancy year-round but this prime space is definitely quieter on weekdays.
"The rooftop is busy Thursdays through Saturdays during the summer months, it's a busy time. And we wanted to take periods where we can bring our guests and local community up to the roof so they can enjoy it," said Ray Keane, the director of sales & marketing for the Z NYC Hotel.
Enjoying the view is part of the class experience.
"It's hilarious 'cause, we'll be in the middle of a pose and people just stop and they start taking photos of the sun setting behind the buildings. And I'm like, go for it! Embrace it. Like, that's what yoga's about, being in the present moment," said Guffey.
The class is attracting tourists who are choosing to stay in Queens over Manhattan...
"I came just for the class and the hotel. So, the two combined with the scenery is just a perfect match," said Venessa Delarosa, who is visiting from Atlanta, GA.
It‘s also attracting Manhattanites to Long Island City.
"Rooftops are very valuable property in Manhattan and I think usually people associate rooftops with going to a bar and now it's something else you can do to look out and see the views," said Jaime Bernstein, who lives on the Upper East Side.
The classes run every other Tuesday and cost $35. It also includes post-class appetizers and cocktails.
