NEW YORK - A driver was placed under arrest Monday night after police say he tried to back into a parking spot and crashed into a Manhattan fruit stand, killing one person and injuring six others.

Henry Herman, 70, faces seven counts of failure to yield to pedestrians. 

The crash happened shortly after 6:45 p.m. at Canal Street and Forsyth Street in Chinatown.

The NYPD said Herman, who remained on the scene, was trying to back up on Forsyth Street to get into the parking spot but jumped the curb and plowed into people standing by the fruit stand.

Police said he man may have mistaken the gas for the brakes.

Senior law enforcement officials told NY1 that they believe the crash was accidental.

Police say Deng Zhang Chun, 56, of Elmhurst, Queens, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire department said shortly before 8 p.m. that two of the people hurt suffered critical injuries and two pedestrians were listed in serious condition.

They were transported to local hospitals.

Officials said two other people, who were in the car involved in the accident, refused medical attention.
