A transformer fire forces the evacuation of a school building in Manhattan.

Firefighters say it started in the basement at The New School, on West 13^th Street in Greenwich Village.

Con Edison cut power to the building, which was evacuated as a precaution

Students say they were in the middle of class when the warning came.

"So we were freaking out, the lights started flickering, and then all of a sudden a voice came over the loudspeaker, saying we needed to evacuate," said one student. "So we went to the stairwell to go down, and there was already smoke coming up from the basement."

The fire is now under control and no injuries were reported.
