Two Staten Island correction officers have been disciplined after they accidentally released a sexual assault suspect last week, according to sources.

Sources at the Department of Correction said the two officers have been suspended pending further investigation.

The suspect, 53-year-old James Alvarez, was being held on $150,000 bail on charges he raped a young relative and sexually abused another child to whom he was related. He has several prior arrests.

He was mistakenly let go last week and brought back into custody shortly afterward.

The Department of Correction said it will also re-train its employees who are responsible for handling discharges.
