Philanthropists fighting over the future of a dilapidated pier on Manhattan's Hudson River waterfront are hoping to settle their differences.

Two sides of a lawsuit over the Pier 55 project are meeting today for negotiations.

The $250-million project would transform a crumbling pier off West 13th Street into a park and performing arts center over the water.

But, opposition groups citied environmental concerns and a lack of public input that put construction on hold back in March.

The federal government has since issued a new permit that will allow work to proceed next month as long as it isn't halted by a new court battle.

If both sides can't reach an agreement after today's meeting, another lawsuit could follow.
