Sen. Bernie Sanders is slated to perform the swearing-in ceremony for Mayor Bill de Blasio's second term on New Year's Day.

In a statement Wednesday, de Blasio called Sanders, "a proud son of Brooklyn and a dedicated advocate for working people."

De Blasio did not throw his support behind Sanders during the presidential race, but the Vermont senator did endorse de Blasio late in his mayoral re-election bid, even riding the subway together just a few days before the election.

A spokesperson for the inauguration said the event will be scaled-down due to the expected frigid weather. The inauguration will cost about half as much as the last inauguration in 2014, according to the mayor's office.

Performers and speakers from the five boroughs are set to participate in the event at City Hall. Public Advocate Letitia James and City Comptroller Scott Stringer will also be sworn in at the ceremony.

NY1's live coverage of the inauguration starts 11 a.m. Monday, and we will bring you the full inauguration live at noon.
