Personnel at Fort Hamilton recognized Marquis de Lafayette with this trail marker. The major general served in the Continental Army during the War of Independence and laid the foundation for the alliance between the U.S. and France. The marker is one of 175 installed throughout the country, they show the places Lafayette visited during a tour of the country 50 years after the American Revolution.

"You have a man that at the same time has a military legacy, that has a moral legacy and that was a Revolutionary War figure alive taking the Revolutionary War spirit to the entire nation. And that, to me, is an powerful legacy." said The Lafayette Trail Inc Founder and President Julien Icher.

People who want to check out the Brooklyn marker can make reservations through the museum at Fort Hamilton. This is the first Lafayette marker on U.S. military property.
