A two-year-old boy was killed after he was pinned between a train and the platform at a Manhattan subway station Wednesday evening, according to the city police department.

Police said the child, whom was not identified, became separated from his mother and was pinned at the Fulton Street station. Officials did not confirm how the child was pinned.

"Our personnel, our response teams were on site very quickly," said Andy Byford, the president of NYC Transit. "I would like to thank NYPD and the other emegency response personnel who attended, which was obviously very traumatic for them as well. People were on site very quickly. It breaks my heart and breaks all of our hearts that this incident has happened."

Emergency crews rushed the toddler to the hospital with severe injuries, but he could not be saved.

Officials are saying the Fulton Street station will be closed all night as their investigation continues.
