Young girls are hitting the basketball courts, and learning from women players.

The Brooklyn Nets Basketball Academy hosted its first ever all-girls youth clinic at the Barclays Center, Sunday. About 50 girls, ages six to 14, participated in the free event. They practiced drills and learned new tricks from their coaches. Organizers say it’s important to inspire young girls to play basketball and other sports.

“It’s empowering because it shows what I can do when I grow up. Sometimes girls aren't really encouraged to play sports, it’s usually what boys are more interested in. I think it’s important for them to try sports out to see what they’re actually passionate about," said 7th grader, Amelia Camilleri.

The Brooklyn Nets are planning on hosting more all-girls youth clinics this summer.
