Some Brooklyn residents are hitting the streets to make their neighborhood a cleaner place to live.

Clean Bushwick Initiative, a grassroots group dedicated to removing trash from the community, hosted its first street clean up of the year Sunday.

The women-led group originally planned to pick up litter at Maria Hernandez Park, but they were excited to see the park was completely litter free. The directors believe this was a result of a recent town hall that discussed the importance of keeping the park clean. Instead, Volunteers focused on removing the trash from bike lanes and sidewalks in the area.

“Spring is here, you know a lot of people are outside and it's great, but that also means there's more litter on the ground, there's people out, and we just want to make sure that people are more aware,” Kristen Tadrous/ Co-Director, Clean Bushwick Initiative
