NEW YORK - The strange smell that was bothering L train riders this week may have been coming from a long-abandoned underground diesel tank.

According to the Daily News, the MTA says the tank is located under the site of an old gas station at Metropolitan and Bushwick Avenues in East Williamsburg.

That's right between the Graham Avenue and Grand Street stops on the L line.

The News says the MTA also floated a second theory that the smell could be a lingering effect of the Greenpoint fuel spill that happened in the 1970s.

An environmental consulting firm tested the air quality between the Bedford Avenue and Grand Street stops Thursday and said the air in the tunnels is safe.
