On Dec. 30, Round Rock, Texas, police conducted a welfare check at the home of Tonya Ellen Bates because she had not shown up for work that day.

Officers discovered the woman’s battered body inside the home, and her car was gone. Bates had two children living with her at her home that she shared with Miles, a roommate.

Information from a cell phone led investigators to a Round Rock Walmart. Surveillance footage from the store showed Miles purchasing camping gear and driving away in Bates’ car.

On Jan. 3, 2018, deputies took Miles into custody during a traffic stop near La Vera, Colorado. The minors, ages 7 and 14, were unharmed.

Miles faces between 20 years and life in federal prison on the kidnapping charges.
