One of the city's most elite high schools is getting a new leader. Eric Contreras is taking over as principal of Stuyvesant.

He's replacing Jie Zhang, who resigned last month.

Education officials say Contreras has an extensive background in the field.

He worked as a social studies teacher in the Bronx and Queens, and went on to help found the Queens High School of Teaching where he served as assistant principal and principal for seven years.

Contreras is currently the Executive Director of Social Studies for the city's Department of Education.

His appointment comes at a time when Stuyvesant is facing criticism for its lack of diversity.

DOE numbers show just nine black students and 14 Hispanic students who took admissions tests last year were admitted to the school.

That's out of 950 available spots.

DOE numbers show 178 white students and 682 Asian students were accepted.
